Quick answer
To spend crypto, either pay a shop that takes it at checkout (through processors such as BitPay, Shopify's USDC checkout or PayPal's Pay with Crypto), or turn your coins into something every checkout takes: a crypto debit card, a prepaid virtual Visa, a gift card, phone credit, a PayPal balance or money in your bank. On Zilligo that conversion costs 1% for phone top-ups and bank payouts, 1.5% for gift cards and PayPal and 2% for the virtual Visa, plus your coin's network fee.
There are seven ways around that wall, and they differ a lot: one works in physical shops, one only on a single store, one costs 1% and another can cost you a monthly plan.
Below you'll find all seven side by side, what each really costs, the limits that apply, and which one fits the thing you want to buy.
Can you pay with crypto directly, or do you have to convert it first?
Both happen. A small share of shops take coins at checkout. Everywhere else, you swap your coins for a way of paying the shop already accepts, then pay with that.
Why don't more shops take coins? Two reasons. The price can move between the moment you pay and the moment the shop gets its money, and most checkout systems were built for cards and payment apps.
That sounds like a dead end. It isn't. A shop never has to accept crypto for you to spend it there. You only need a payment method it already takes, funded from your coins.
What are the 7 ways to spend crypto?
The seven ways are: pay the shop in crypto, use a crypto debit card, load a prepaid virtual Visa, buy a gift card, top up a phone, spend through PayPal, or cash out to your bank and use your normal card.
| Way | Works at | What you need | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pay the shop directly | Shops with a crypto checkout | A wallet holding the coin the shop asks for | Your network fee; the shop's processor sets the rest |
| Crypto debit card | Online and in shops, where the card network is taken | An exchange or app account, an ID check, a supported country | Varies: plan fees, currency fees, spreads |
| Prepaid virtual Visa | Online checkouts that take Visa | A free Zilligo account and an email for the card details | 2% on Zilligo, plus $10 on a first card |
| Gift card | One brand, in one country or region | An email for the code | 1.5% on Zilligo |
| Phone top-up | A prepaid phone number | The number, with its country code | 1% on Zilligo |
| PayPal balance | Anywhere PayPal is taken | A verified PayPal account | 1.5% on Zilligo |
| Cash out to your bank | Everywhere your bank card works | A bank account | 1% on Zilligo, by SEPA or ACH |
Zilligo figures are our published fees. Every route also costs your coin's network fee.

How do you pay a shop that accepts crypto?
Choose crypto on the checkout page, then send the exact amount it shows, on the network it names, from your own wallet before its timer ends.
Shops rarely touch coins themselves. A payment processor sits in between, and it decides which coins and networks you can pay with. These are three you'll run into:
Shops in its directory, Newegg among them, take Bitcoin and other coins through a BitPay invoice.
Since June 2025, Shopify stores can take USDC on the Base network, paid from a crypto wallet.
Launched in July 2025 for US merchants. You pay from wallets such as Coinbase, MetaMask or Phantom.
- Step 1Choose crypto at checkout
Look for a crypto, Bitcoin or processor button next to the card options.
- Step 2Pick the coin and network
The payment page lists what it takes. If your coin isn't there, this route won't work for you.
- Step 3Send the exact amount
Scan the QR code or copy the address, and send what the page asks for, before the countdown ends.
- Step 4Wait for the network
The shop marks the order paid once your transaction confirms on the chain.
Pay the shop in crypto
- Only where the shop offers it
- The shop's processor picks the coins
- Usually only your network fee
- Mistakes are hard to undo
Convert, then pay
- Works wherever Visa, the brand or PayPal is taken
- You choose the coin you send
- One fee, shown before you send
- Shop refunds follow its normal rules
Are crypto debit cards worth it?
For spending in a physical shop, they're the most direct crypto option there is. The trade-off is an account, an ID check and terms that depend on the country you live in.
The fee picture is rarely one number. A card can carry a plan fee, a currency conversion fee and a spread on every sale of your coins, and rewards often depend on holding or locking up the issuer's own token.
Cards also come and go. BitPay closed its prepaid Mastercard in June 2023. Bitrefill's card is open only to residents of most EU and EEA countries, after an ID check.
Before you apply for a crypto debit card
- It's offered where you live.
- You're ready to upload an ID document.
- You know any monthly or plan fee.
- You know the currency fee and the spread on each sale.
- You know whether rewards need you to lock up a token.
Crypto debit card
- Exchange account and an ID check
- Online and in shops, where offered
- Fees vary by plan and country
- One card, spent from your exchange balance
Zilligo virtual Visa
- Free account, no ID documents for a standard order
- Online checkouts only
- 2% per load, plus $10 on a first card, shown first
- A new card for each order
How does a prepaid virtual Visa work?
You pick an amount, pay for it with coins, and receive a Visa card number, expiry date and security code by email. It works at online checkouts that take Visa until the balance is used up. The details are on crypto to virtual Visa.
Good fits are subscriptions, software, cloud tools and travel bookings. A few merchants turn prepaid cards away, car rental firms in particular, so check before you rely on one.

|---|---|---|
| Bronze | $100 to $1,000 | 2% |
| Silver | $1,001 to $5,000 | 2% |
The amount you load sets the tier; the fee stays the same. A first card adds a one-time $10 issuing fee.
Each order is a separate card. You can't add money to it later; when you need more, place a new order and update the card where you use it.
How do you buy gift cards with crypto?
Pick the brand, the country or store it's for, and the value. Send your coins to the order, and the code is emailed, usually within minutes of your coins confirming.
| Brand | Fee | Per order | Regions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon | 1.5% | $50 to $1,000 | 8 Amazon stores, including .com, .co.uk and .de |
| Apple | 1.5% | $50 to $500 | US and India |
| Google Play | 1.5% | $50 to $500 | 11 countries |
| Steam | 1.5% | $50 to $500 | 16 regions |
| Paysafecard | 1.5% | $50 to $500 | Sites that take Paysafecard |

Virtual Visa
- 2% fee, plus $10 on a first card
- Any online checkout that takes Visa
- $100 up to $5,000 per order
- Best when you shop around
Gift card
- 1.5% fee
- One brand, one region
- $50 up to $500, or $1,000 for Amazon
- Best for one store, or as a present
Want a brand Zilligo doesn't sell? Specialist stores such as Bitrefill, Coinsbee and Cryptorefills each list thousands of products by their own count. Compare the final price at their checkout, not the headline. The Bitrefill comparison sets out those options fairly.
Before you buy a gift card
- You'll really spend it at that brand.
- The region matches your account, or the account of the person receiving it.
- The value fits the range for that brand.
- Nobody asked you to buy it to settle a bill, a fine or a debt.
- You have somewhere private to keep the code.
- You've noted the order reference.
How do you top up a phone with crypto?
Type the number with its country code, choose $50 to $300, and send your coins. The credit goes straight onto the phone, usually within minutes of your coins confirming. Details on crypto to mobile top-up.
The fee is 1%, and it reaches prepaid numbers on most carriers in 150+ countries. That makes it a handy way to keep family abroad in calls and data, with nothing for them to set up.
- Step 1Enter the number
With the country code first, such as +63 for the Philippines. Read every digit back.
- Step 2Choose the amount
From $50 to $300. The quote shows the 1% fee on top.
- Step 3Send the coins
The exact amount, to the one-time address on your order.
- Step 4Credit arrives
The carrier usually texts the phone to say it's there.
Example: $60 of phone credit, paid in Solana
Worked example. Paying in XRP instead? Copy the destination tag from the order page as well as the address.
Can you spend crypto with PayPal?
Yes, in two ways. Some US shops take crypto through PayPal's own Pay with Crypto option, and anyone can cash crypto out to a PayPal balance, then spend it wherever PayPal is accepted.
Launched in July 2025 for US merchants. You pay from your own wallet; the shop is paid in dollars or PYUSD.
Cash out with Zilligo to your PayPal email for 1.5%, then pay any shop or person that takes PayPal.
The first depends on the shop switching it on. The second works anywhere PayPal does, and PayPal runs in 200+ markets.
PayPalnow
You received $250.00From Zilligo. Ready to spend or send.Which way should you pick for what you're buying?
Start from the purchase, not the coin. The thing you're buying usually picks the route for you:
| If you're buying... | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A subscription or software | Virtual Visa | Works wherever Visa is taken online |
| Something on Amazon | Amazon gift card | Redeems straight into your Amazon balance |
| Games or apps | Steam, Google Play or Apple | Store credit in the region you play or download in |
| Credit for a phone abroad | Mobile top-up | Lands on the phone with only the number |
| From a shop that lists PayPal | PayPal | Pays like any other PayPal checkout |
| In a physical shop | A crypto debit card, or your bank card after a cashout | The Zilligo card is online only |
| Rent, bills or a big purchase | Cash out to your bank | Higher limits and ordinary bank transfers |
When cashing out first is the smarter move
For large amounts, payments in person or anything paid by bank transfer, put the money in your bank and spend from there. A SEPA transfer or ACH takes up to $15,000 per order, for 1%.
Convert to a card or code
- Ready in minutes for most routes
- Tied to online checkouts, a brand or a phone
- Best for one purchase at a time
Cash out to your bank
- Spend with the card you already have
- Works online, in shops and for bills
- Best for large or regular spending
Every bank route, step by step, is in how to cash out crypto.
Which way to spend crypto costs the least?
Through Zilligo, phone top-ups and bank payouts are the cheapest routes at 1%. Gift cards and PayPal cost 1.5%; the virtual Visa costs 2%, plus $10 on a first card. The network fee to move your coins comes on top.
Zilligo fee by way to spend, and what it means on $300
The cost most people forget: the network fee
Your wallet pays the blockchain to move your coins. That money goes to the network, not to Zilligo, and it depends on the coin and how busy the chain is.
Typical cost to send each coin, in US dollars
Because the network fee stays the same whatever you spend, it bites hardest on small orders:
A $3 network fee as a share of the order
Where the money goes on a $300 virtual Visa, paid in USDT on Tron
- Card balance you can spend$300.00
- Zilligo fee, 2%$6.00
- Tron network feeabout $3
- USDT leaving your walletAbout $309.00
All 22 payouts and their fees are on the fees page; the limits are on the limits page.
How do you spend crypto without getting scammed?
Three habits cover most of it: never buy a gift card because someone asked to be paid with one, check the region before you pay, and guard every code like cash.
A call, text or message you weren't expecting, often posing as support or an official.
Pay today or lose an account, face a fine or miss a deal.
The numbers on the card, or a photo of the back.
A password, a seed phrase or control of your screen.
Why do scammers prefer gift cards and coins? Once a code is redeemed or a coin is sent, getting it back is very hard. The FTC warns that crypto payments usually can't be reversed.
Treat a code like a banknote: whoever sees it can spend it. Don't share screenshots, and only enter it on the brand's own site or app.
Already handed a code to a scammer?
- Step 1Contact the brand straight away
Ask the gift card company whether the balance can still be frozen. Minutes count.
- Step 2Save the evidence
The code, the receipt or order reference, and every message from the scammer.
- Step 3Report it
To the police, and in the US to the FTC as well.
- Step 4Tell Zilligo if you bought it here
Message support on Telegram with the order reference. We can't promise to recover the money.
On Zilligo's side, a person reviews every order, and orders tied to fraud, scams or stolen funds are refused. Zilligo support never asks for passwords, seed phrases or remote access. More on the security page.
Do you pay tax when you spend crypto?
Often, yes. In many countries spending crypto is treated like selling it, so a card, a gift card or phone credit paid for with coins can create a taxable gain or loss.
What follows is general information, not tax advice. Rules differ by country, so check your own or ask an accountant.
The tax is usually worked out on the coin, not on what you bought. Roughly, the gain is what the coins were worth when you spent them, minus what you paid for them.
Example: Bitcoin spent on a $400 virtual Visa
Made-up figures: a $400 card plus the 2% fee of $8. The network fee is left out to keep it simple. In many countries the gain counts on the day you spend, even though you never held cash.
Stablecoins behave differently. USDT stays close to $1, so spending it rarely produces much gain, although swapping another coin into USDT earlier may have.
Note this down for every purchase
- The date you spent the coins
- The coin, the amount and its value in your currency then
- What you originally paid for those coins
- The order reference and the transaction ID
- What you received: a card, a code, a top-up or a payout
Zilligo keeps order records for 5 years, but your own notes are quicker to hand an accountant. The general rules are in crypto tax when you cash out.
Now it is your turn

Start a cashoutFrequently asked questions
Can I use the Zilligo virtual Visa in a shop or with Apple Pay?
It's a virtual card made for online payments. For spending in person, a crypto debit card or a cashout to your bank, then your usual card, are the routes that fit.
How can I spend crypto on Amazon?
Buy an Amazon gift card with crypto for the Amazon store your account uses (Zilligo covers 8 stores), then redeem the code into your Amazon balance. The fee is 1.5%, from $50 to $1,000 per order.
Which coin is best for a small purchase?
Solana or XRP, which usually cost a fraction of a cent to send. USDT is useful when you want the value to stay near $1 while it confirms. With XRP, include the destination tag from your order page.
Do I need an account to buy a card or gift card with crypto?
Yes, a free Zilligo account, set up in a minute with a handle, a sign-in key and a recovery code. A standard order needs no ID documents.
What happens if my 20 minutes run out before I send?
The quote expires and you can get a fresh one; check the new coin amount, because prices move. If your coins were already on their way, contact support with your order reference: a payment within 24 hours can still be matched.
Can I cancel a card or gift card order?
Yes, before you send your coins. Once they arrive and the order is processed, it's final. If you send more than the order asks for, the extra is credited to your next order or returned on request.
Can I send a gift card code to someone else?
Yes. Choose the region their account uses, and send the code privately, never in a public post or group chat.
Is spending crypto taxable?
In many countries, yes: spending is treated like selling, so a gain on the coins can be taxed. Keep a record of each purchase and check your local rules.
