About SOL

Cheap to send, easy to send the wrong thing

Solana's base fee is 5,000 lamports per signature, or 0.000005 SOL, a tiny fraction of a cent. Blocks come in well under a second. For a coin you want to turn into spending money, that removes the usual reasons to wait or to save up for one bigger order.

The risk on Solana sits in the wallet. Phantom and Solflare show SOL next to a long list of tokens: USDC, USDT, memecoins, wrapped SOL and liquid staking tokens such as JitoSOL or mSOL. They all share one address, and an order credits only one of them: native SOL.

Two kinds of balance are not ready to send as they are. Staked SOL has to be unstaked first, and it becomes free only at the end of the current epoch, which can be two or three days away. Liquid staking tokens have to be swapped back to SOL. Do either before you create an order, because the rate is held for 20 minutes.

A Solana account has to keep either nothing or a small rent-exempt minimum, about 0.00089 SOL for a plain wallet, so wallets hold a little back when you send your maximum. Let the wallet work out the maximum for you.
